My collection titled "Validity," was inspired by the dark origins of Little Red Riding Hood. I found the relationship between little red and the wolf was easily translated to a modern story of sexual assault. Although I did not literally use the story of little red; I dissected the tale to find parallels between the metaphors in fairy tales and the language used in the media today regarding assault.
Through my research, experience and interviews, I saw that victims of assault were often ones to blame and their stories were covered up or partially told. In the story of little red, the wolf was someone known to her and this is a common thread; that an abuser is known to the victim. This is a topic that has been distorted and in turn created a fear in those who have been assaulted.
I used garments that range in different styles and cuts to express there is no one specific garment that leads to an assault as what the victim wore is a popular debate.
As a person with a background in fine arts, I always approach design in a hands on and artful manner. I used my existing illustration and writing style to create a personal story telling motif that truthfully and explicitly shows stories of assault. My garments act as wearable memoirs and creates a bridge between art and fashion.
My goal is not to profit off or glamorize delicate subjects but rather educate the public of topics that the media lacks understanding in.
Anna Devereux Hoberg is a designer and artist from Rockville, Maryland. At a young age she was exposed to the art world and began to slowly understand fashion and construction by attempting to mimic shapes she created in her artwork.
Growing up in a single parent household, she was exposed to anxiety and trauma at a very young age and used writing and art as an outlet of communication and escapism. She used this outlet and continued to marry her skills of fine arts and sewing throughout high school and college.
She continues to use her own experiences with anxiety and trauma as a foundation for her work but has found ways to grow awareness and gain closure through her work.
She hopes to continue to bridge the art and fashion world and create artful designs while building awareness.
